Teaching English as a second language (ESL) has evolved dramatically, favoring more flexible, adaptive, and learner-centered approaches over rigid, conventional methodologies. Today’s ESL instruction increasingly stresses active and participatory strategies to increase student engagement and intrinsic motivation. Among these, games and gamification have emerged as particularly impactful strategies, leveraging the cognitive benefits of play to create engaging, realistic, and impactful language-learning practices. The study employs a quantitative research approach. The tool used for collecting quantitative data is a survey and interview. The survey and interviews were directed to two groups of undergraduate students (Foundation Program) who study at Bayan College in Muscat, Oman. The sample includes one hundred male and female participants. The findings show that integrating games and interactive digital material in the classroom significantly enhances their four language learning skills, vocabulary acquisition, critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and teamwork skills, and encourages them to participate in the classroom actively. This article explores the multifaceted role of games and gamification in ESL education, examining their potential to enhance communication skills and cultural awareness. It also highlights practical applications, presenting concrete examples of game-based learning activities tailored to various proficiency levels. Furthermore, the article covers the challenges associated with implementation, such as balancing entertainment with pedagogical value and addressing diverse learner needs.
